For the most part the sound effects are very realistic. It has a very computer generated sounding feel to it. This goes a long way to supporting the genre of science fiction. It allows the listener to anticipate what’s coming. That classic Terminator sound has a very distinct feel to it. We can see how scared Sarah is but we can also feel it in the beat of the music. The viewer knows that the Terminator is now on the good side but Sarah doesn’t, and that lack of knowledge is emphasized by that dramatic music. When Sarah is running through the mental hospital trying to find a way out and suddenly encounters the Terminator from her nightmares, the music changes to the classic “Terminator” theme. Music is also used very effectively through out this movie, to heighten suspense, dram, and to ratchet up the fear factor. The music makes the viewer feel what’s happening more strongly. The “film’s music score is what plays in the background of a scene while action takes place”(Goodykoontz, p.6.4). The people behind the creation of these sounds are called Foley artists, named after Jack Foley who created the first studio for producing sound effects ” (Goodykoontz, p.6.4).įinally we come to the music or score of the film. Sound effects are commonly “recorded separately and added into the final film in post–production” ” (Goodykoontz, p.6.4) to add realism to a scene. They are roaring engines and the squealing breaks in a car chase. They are the gunshots and swords clashing in the epic battle. So now we know what the dialogue is, but what are sound effects? Sound effects are what bring the movie to life. It’s not just the words you say but how you say them that allows people to recognize your meaning. “Countless phrases uttered in movies have become a part of our everyday conversation” (Goodykoontz, p.6.4) almost anyone will know what you mean when you utter a phrases from Terminator, like “Hasta la vista, baby” or “I’ll be back” in a mock Arnold Schwarzenegger voice.
